The Mothership Lectern

When adidas re-built their US headquarters, they went all out. The “village” is comprised of five high-tech buildings, one of which features an ultra-modern auditorium with the ability to completely impress big-wigs, head honchos, and world class athletes. The architect, Michael Roberts at LRS, came to us to help design and fabricate a lectern that could act as a giant remote control for the whole thing.
The design of the lectern faced two major challenges: house all of the components necessary to interface with the auditorium’s master control, and incorporate the same design elements seen throughout the complex. Due to the complexity of the components in the lectern, access was critically important. We started with a welded steel frame, added birch plywood to the interior, and sheathed it with removable perforated aluminum panels on the front and sides and maple cabinetry on the back.
Next came addressing the requirements of commonly used on-board equipment: two 17” monitors, a 12” touch screen controller, a cpu, document camera, DVD, VCR, laptop interface- all of it had to be mobile. After several design meetings, construction drawing drafts and binders full of submittal specs, it came together. We topped it off with a sandblasted logo panel. |
